Citi ThankYou points transfer to eligible airline loyalty programs through your ThankYou account. You link the airline account to your Citi profile first. Moving your points from Citi to an airline loyalty program is usually quick, but it's one-way, so order of the steps you take matters. Find a bookable award seat first, confirm the exact flights are available, then transfer only the points that award needs. One Citi-specific thing to know before you start: the card you hold can change your transfer ratio, and your access to American is limited to certain cards. Confirm both before you fall in love with your plan.

Citi airline transfers at a glance:

  • Confirm a bookable award seat with the ticketing airline program before you transfer, because the move can't be undone.

  • Link your airline loyalty account first, with the account holder name matched to your Citi profile.

  • The card you hold sets your transfer ratio. No-annual-fee cards transfer at a reduced rate, and only certain Citi cards can transfer to American.

  • Citi is a strong path to American and to oneworld partners. See Citi Transfer Partners for the full current list.

  • Transfers to most partners are quick, but confirm the seat is available on the airline partner website before you rely on that.

  • Use transfer bonuses only when you already have a flight in mind, not as a reason to move points.

Before you transfer Citi points to an airline

Confirm the trip before you move anything, because a Citi transfer to an airline is one-way. The Citi-specific check comes first: your transfer ratio depends on which card you hold, and access to American is limited to certain cards, so confirm both before you plan a booking. Then make sure the exact seat is available on your dates, that the airline program can book it, and that your loyalty account is open and the name on it matches the one on your Citi account. Also note the minimum increment too, so you move the right number of points.

Which Citi cards or accounts allow point transfers?

This matters more with Citi than with most banks. Every card that earns ThankYou points can transfer to airline partners, but the card you hold sets your transfer ratio.

The annual-fee travel cards transfer at full value. No-annual-fee cards transfer at a reduced rate rather than not at all, which is still a real entry point. There's one important exception. American AAdvantage is access-limited, so only certain Citi cards can transfer to American, and the no-annual-fee cards can't access American at any ratio. Points earned across your eligible cards can pool into one balance to transfer from. Confirm your card's ratio and its American access before you plan a booking, and see Citi Transfer Partners for more.

Current Citi transfer partners

Citi points transfer to a set of airline and hotel loyalty programs that runs more niche than mainstream, with a few genuinely strong partners. However, partner access and ratios can change, so treat any outside list as a snapshot. Citi transfers to 19 airline and hotel programs in total. Two examples show the process in practice: American is a direct partner on eligible cards, which few banks offer, and EVA Air is a full-value path to premium cabins to Asia. For the complete, current roster and each program's ratio, see Citi Transfer Partners.

How much are Citi points worth?

The value of a Citi point depends on how you use it, and with Citi it also depends on your card's ratio. Transferred at full value to a strong partner like American or EVA for a premium award (think business or first class seats), a point can be worth several times its cash value. Transferred from a no-annual-fee card at a reduced rate, the same booking costs more points, so the value per point is lower. point.me values Citi points around 1.7 cents as a general guide, but the value on your specific trip and card is what counts. For the full breakdown, see How Much Are Citi Points Worth?

How to transfer Citi points to travel partners

The process is short once your accounts are linked. You sign in to your ThankYou account, open the points-transfer area, choose the airline program, confirm the linked loyalty account, enter the number of points, and submit. It takes a few minutes on screen. The care goes into what you confirm before you click, including your card's ratio. The steps below follow that flow.

Step 1: Log into your Citi account and navigate to Travel & Benefits

Sign in to your Citi ThankYou account. Confirm you're signed in on the card whose ratio you want to use, since with Citi the ratio and the American access depend on the card. Then hover over or navigate to Travel & Benefits, then click ThankYou Rewards from the dropdown.

Step 2:  Navigate to More Ways to Redeem, then click Points Transfer.

Go to More Ways to Redeem and select Points Transfer. This will take you to the hub that lists the programs you can move points to.

Step 2 in the transfer process for Citi ThankYou points

Step 3: Select your airline transfer partner

Choose the airline loyalty program you want. If an airline isn't on your list, it isn't available on your card, and you may need to book through an alliance partner instead. The airline-specific routes below cover the common cases.

Once you’ve found the program, click the dropdown icon next to the program name. When the window expands, click Start Transfer.

Step 3 in the Citi ThankYou points transfer process

Connect your airline loyalty account before points can move. Enter the loyalty number and confirm the account holder name matches your Citi profile exactly, since a mismatch is the top reason a transfer fails or stalls. Next, check the box acknowledging that you've read and agree to the terms and conditions, then click Continue.

Tip: Enter the amount under Miles (the amount you need in the destination program) rather than the Citi ThankYou side. Transfer ratios aren't always 1:1, and there may be a transfer bonus running. The system will automatically calculate how many Citi points are required.

Follow the remaining on-screen instructions to complete the transfer.

How long does a Citi points transfer take?

Most Citi transfers post within minutes, so speed usually isn't the sticking point. With Citi, the check that comes first is access: confirm your card actually reaches the program, especially for American, before you count on the transfer at all. A couple of partners also run slower than instant, so for a hard-to-find award, confirm the seat is still bookable on the partner website.

How to transfer Citi points to American Airlines

American is a direct Citi transfer partner, but only on eligible cards, so confirm your card can transfer to American before you plan the booking. When it can, points move straight into your AAdvantage account. This is a Citi strength, since Citi is the only transferable bank currency to American directly. Confirm the exact American award seat first. Next step: see How to Redeem Citi ThankYou Points for Flights for when an American transfer is the right call.

How to transfer Citi points to United

United isn't a direct Citi transfer partner, and Citi's Star Alliance options are on the thinner side. The cleanest route Citi reaches is avianca lifemiles, which books United award space without fuel surcharges. Confirm the United seat through lifemilesfirst. Because that bench is thin, many travelers pair Citi with a currency that reaches United directly. Next step: see Citi Transfer Partners for the Star Alliance routes.

How to transfer Citi points to Delta

Delta isn't a direct Citi transfer partner. To use Citi points for Delta flights, transfer to Flying Blue or Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, which can book Delta award space, and price the same Delta flights there. Confirm the seat through Virgin Atlantic before moving points Next step: see Citi Transfer Partners for the Star Alliance routes and How to Use Citi ThankYou Points on Delta Air Lines.

Tips for transferring Citi points to travel partners

  • Search for a bookable award seat before you transfer any points.

  • Check your card's transfer ratio, and confirm the card can reach American if that's your goal.

  • For United, plan on avianca LifeMiles or a paired currency, since Citi's Star options are thin.

  • Treat transfer bonuses as time-sensitive, and check Current Transfer Bonuses instead of planning around an old offer.

Can you transfer Citi points between cards or accounts?

Citi ended points sharing between cardmembers, so you can no longer move ThankYou points into another person's Citi account. There's a clean way to still book for family. Transfer your points into an airline program that allows family pooling, such as JetBlue TrueBlue or Flying Blue. Then pool them there with the people you're booking for. Set up that program-side pooling before you need it, since new accounts and fresh transfers take time to sort out. This keeps a household able to combine points toward one award, just one step later in the process.

Frequently asked questions about transferring Citi points to airlines

Summary and expert verdict

Citi is a strong specialist to transfer, with a direct line to American that no other bank offers and a full-value path to EVA for premium cabins to Asia. The Citi twist is the card: it sets your transfer ratio, and it decides whether you can reach American at all, so confirm both before you plan a booking. The safe sequence holds: search for a bookable award seat first, confirm the program can book it, check your card's ratio and access, link your loyalty account with the name matched, then move only the points the award needs. The transfer is one-way, so the confirmed seat always comes before the click.
