If you weren’t already aware, microcations (also dubbed micro-traveling) are having a moment. On TikTok and beyond, Gen Z and millennials are embracing quick one- to three-day (or even same day!) getaways, as opposed to a long-haul vacation with significant time off work.
Although less vacation time may initially sound like a bad thing, microcations are becoming popular because travelers want a quick and low-effort escape. Your two-week, five-city trip to Europe requires months of preparation and lots of PTO, but your long weekend in London can be booked just one or two weeks before departure. All you need is a flight and a hotel room.
However, microcations can become sneakily expensive very quickly. Last-minute hotel and flight prices can be exorbitantly high, which can end up making your quick getaway cost just as much as a standard vacation. And why would you spend hundreds of dollars on a flight just to see a new city for one or two days? If you’re only looking at last-minute cash fares, you’re missing an entirely different pricing system: points and miles.
Luckily for you, point.me’s data suggests that microcations aren’t just easier to plan — they’re often one of the most efficient ways to use your points. If you’re looking for an easy way to unlock real value from your points, microcations can be one of the best ways to do so. While you might think of using points and miles only for larger aspirational trips, you can actually use your rewards to offset the cost of your microcation and feel good about not spending that much on a short trip.
If you want shorter, more frequent trips, you don’t need to be a millionaire. All you need is a few thousand points, and you can have a short reset in no time — here’s how.

How to plan a microcation
If you want to stretch your points the furthest, consider skipping the hotel altogether and do a same-day trip or quick overnight by flying out super early in the morning, and using the red-eye flight back as the place to lay your head.
These itineraries can surface some of the best-value award flights, especially if you’re willing to fly at off-peak hours. In many cases, that means:
Fewer points required
Better availability
And more opportunities to book last-minute
If your goal is a quick change of scenery, not a full vacation, this kind of trip can turn a small points balance into something you can actually use more often.
For a slightly longer microcation, you’ll generally get much better flight and hotel deals if you can schedule at least one or two of the days of your trip during the week. Avoid popular travel holidays like Christmas, as hotel prices are typically much higher. For instance, if you get Monday off work, consider scheduling your microcation from Saturday to Tuesday. You might pay higher rates at your hotel on Saturday night, but you can save on Sunday and Monday night.
If you aren’t sure where to start, point.me Loyalty Specialist Jimmy Yoon says AI can be very useful. “I would ask AI to help provide a list of destinations that are no more than 3 hours away by flight, including a breakdown of things to do at each destination and the weather during the timeframe I’m looking to travel.”
Once you find a destination that interests you, it’s time to start searching for flights and hotels that are bookable with points and miles from your favorite loyalty programs. “Luckily,” Yoon says, “point.me offers the ability to search for flights using your points that are synced to your account. This allows you to only see flight results you can actually book.”
Short-haul, last-minute flights often require far fewer points than you’d expect — points you might already have sitting in your account. And if you transfer points from a credit card, you’ll pay significantly fewer points than you would when booking through a credit card portal that ties point costs directly to cash fares. And the numbers back it up.
For instance, you can book a flight from Dallas (DFW) to Cancun (CUN) for just 7,500 Atmos Rewards points each way. If you don’t have those points sitting in your Atmos account already, you can transfer them from Bilt Rewards at a 1:1 ratio. That’s right — you can take a microcation to a beautiful beach in Cancun by using the rewards you earn from paying your rent every month.

Real microcation deals under 15K points
No matter where you’re based, you can take a microcation. Short-haul flights often have lower award pricing thresholds, which means you can score a round-trip flight for just a few thousand points. And if you know how to maximize transfer partners, you can get fantastic value from your points.
If you book through a credit card travel portal, you’re tied to a fixed valuation from your points which is typically 1 cent per point. If your last-minute flight is expensive in cash, it’ll be expensive in points through a portal. However, last-minute award deals via transfer partners offer disproportionately high value. Plus, quick trips let you save on hotels or vacation rentals, further reducing your overall cost.
Here are some examples of microcations you can take for under 15,000 points.

How to find great deals
Yoon notes that any points and miles can help you save, but there are a few things to keep in mind to get the best deal. If you want maximum flexibility, it’s best to choose a credit card that earns a point currency that can be transferred to travel partners. Think of cards that earn American Express Membership Rewards points or Chase Ultimate Rewards, rather than co-branded airline or hotel cards that only earn points that can be used with that hotel or airline.
To find the best deals, consider programs that offer the best pricing for short-haul flights within North America. Yoon recommends Alaska Airlines Atmos Rewards as a great starting place, but Air France-KLM Flying Blue and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club can also offer strong redemptions.
Regarding hotels, Yoon recommends World of Hyatt, one of the last major hotel chains to use an award chart. This makes redemptions much more predictable, as they aren’t subject to dynamic pricing. It also helps that they are a Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer partner.
If you aren’t knowledgeable about using points, point.me makes the award search process simple by searching the best deals across more than 150 airline and loyalty programs. When you find an award redemption you’re interested in, you’ll see step-by-step instructions on how to transfer your points and book your flight.
Bottom line
Microcations can be frequent, spontaneous, and — with the use of points — insanely affordable. While most travelers only see cash prices when planning a microcation, points reveal a second, often cheaper system. Fortunately, you don’t need a huge points balance to start traveling more. As long as you have a free weekend and a handful of points, you can get the reset you so desperately need.
