Wells Fargo has the smallest transfer partner list of the major banks. That means your points can’t be transferred directly to United, World of Hyatt or Alaska. You can, however, still work around most of these roadblocks. This guide helps you understand the gaps in Wells Fargo’s partner list, and how to fill them, plus you’ll learn more about the tricks that are specific to Wells Fargo, like how to use its one-point minimum transfer.

**Wells Fargo tricks at a glance:**

- Book American through Cathay, British Airways, or Iberia, all at full value.
- The workaround for Delta is to use Flying Blue.
- Book United through Avianca LifeMiles.
- Wells Fargo points can’t transfer to World of Hyatt, so it’s best to carry another currency, like Chase or Bilt points, that can.
- Use the one-point minimum transfer rule to stop airline miles from expiring.
- Always search for live award space before you transfer points.

## The airlines you can’t book directly with Wells Fargo, and how to fly on them anyway

Wells Fargo's roster is short and its Star Alliance access is especially weak. But the partners it does have, including the Avios family, Cathay and Flying Blue, cover American and Delta well. This table shows you the programs that Wells Fargo *can't* reach directly, and the workaround for each. Check out our guide to learn more about [Wells Fargo Transfer Partners](https://www.point.me/insights/wells-fargo-transfer-partners/):

| **What you want to book** | **Transfer Wells Fargo points to** | **Transfer Ratio** | **What to watch** |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| American Airlines | Cathay Asia Miles, British Airways, or Iberia | 1:1 | All these programs have different redemption rates and taxes/fees, so it’s best to compare |
| United | Avianca LifeMiles (only Star door) | 1:1 | The lone Star path; thin, so often better to pair |
| Delta | Air France-KLM Flying Blue, or Virgin Atlantic | 1:1 | Flying Blue for lower fees; Virgin for Delta One to Europe |
| Alaska (Atmos Rewards) | Cathay Asia Miles, British Airways, or Iberia | 1:1 | No direct transfers to Atmos; Avios can be cheap for short hops |
| World of Hyatt | Not a transfer partner | — | Use Chase or Bilt points, the only currencies that transfer to Hyatt |

## Wells Fargo tricks and workarounds deep dive

These are the workarounds for Wells Fargo points. Just make sure you route those points through the right partner and confirm seat availability beforehand.

### Book American Airlines with Wells Fargo points through Avios or Cathay

American isn't a Wells Fargo partner. But you can book American flights through three of its Oneworld partners: British Airways Club, Iberia and Cathay Pacific Asia Miles, all at a 1:1 transfer ratio. British Airways and Iberia both use the Avios currency and price by distance, but they use slightly different redemption rates. This means that short and medium nonstop flights in the US can be downright cheap. Use Cathay for premium cabins on American; it sometimes prices business class tickets low. The catch? Cathay doesn’t always have access to all of American’s award space. In these cases, it’s worth giving Cathay Pacific a call, especially if another Oneworld program, such as British Airways, has access to the seat you want. Note that Wells Fargo does not have partnerships with Qatar or Qantas, so those Avios options aren't available here. Confirm the availability of the exact American flight you want before you transfer points. If American is a priority airline for you, consider adding an eligible Citi card to your wallet. Citi has a direct transfer relationship with American.

### United options are weak on Wells Fargo, so another card might be a better option

This is Wells Fargo's weakest spot. The only way to book Star Alliance flights is with Avianca LifeMiles at a 1:1 transfer ratio. Among Wells Fargo’s partners, there's no Aeroplan, no Turkish, no EVA and no KrisFlyer. So the broad, reliable United access that you see with other banks simply isn't here. LifeMiles lets you book United business class, and at low prices and without fuel surcharges, but the seat inventory isn’t always there. It's worth a try, though. If United is a high priority for you, the best move is to hold a different points currency, like Chase or Bilt points, which both transfer to United MileagePlus, and keep Wells Fargo for the partners it covers well.

### Book Delta with Wells Fargo points through Flying Blue or Virgin Atlantic

Wells Fargo points don’t transfer to Delta, but there are two ways to book SkyTeam flights. Air France-KLM Flying Blue (1:1 transfer ratio) is the workhorse option here: it books Delta-operated flights and usually has the lowest fees. Virgin Atlantic Flying Club (1:1 transfer ratio) is the second choice, and is best for booking Delta One to Europe. It sometimes prices business class below what Flying Blue would offer, but with much higher taxes and fees. So check both: Flying Blue for breadth of availability and low fees, and Virgin for premium transatlantic seats.

### Book Alaska (Atmos Rewards) flights with Wells Fargo points

Wells Fargo points don't transfer to Atmos Rewards, Alaska's loyalty program, but Alaska is a oneworld partner, so these flights can be booked through Avios. British Airways and Iberia (both with 1:1 transfer ratios), can be cheap for short flights, while Cathay covers some longer routes. Confirm the Alaska segment you want in the Avios program before you move points. Alaska's best award options are usually reserved for partners that have direct transfer relationships, so pair your Wells Fargo card with a Bilt card to unlock these.

### For World of Hyatt, pair your points with another currency

Wells Fargo points do not transfer to World of Hyatt. If Hyatt is important to you, consider Chase, which transfers to Hyatt at a 4:3 ratio on the Sapphire Preferred and 1:1 ratio on the Sapphire Reserve family, or Bilt, which has a 1:1 ratio (switching to 4:3 in January, 2027). Keep Wells Fargo for its airline partners, and remember that it pairs well with other currencies.

## Tricks specific to Wells Fargo points

Two strategies are unique to Wells Fargo: a transfer minimum that no other bank can match, and full-value transfers from its no-fee card.

### Use Wells Fargo’s one-point transfer minimum to keep partner miles from expiring

Wells Fargo lets you transfer as little as 1 point in each transaction. That’s far lower than what most banks require. Usually points must be moved in 1,000- or even 2,000-point increments. Many airline and hotel programs have points that expire. One way to reset this expiration clock is to move points into your account. So a tiny transfer from Wells Fargo, even a single point, can keep a whole balance of partner miles alive. The steps: find a partner where your miles are about to expire, confirm that the program counts an incoming transfer as qualifying activity, then move the smallest allowable amount. It's the cheapest way to protect miles you've already earned, and no other banks let you do this efficiently.

### Transfer at full value, even from the no-fee card

With many credit card issuers, no-fee cards typically can't transfer points to partners at all, or points transfer at a worse ratio. Wells Fargo doesn't work that way. Both of its travel cards, the no-fee Autograph and the annual-fee Autograph Journey, transfer to partners at full value. This makes Wells Fargo’s  low-cost cards a great entry point to full-value award travel if you’re just getting started or are looking for a no-fee card. Don't assume you need a pricier card for strong transfer value.

## Before you transfer: good habits that protect your points

Don’t waste your points. These tips are universal and work across credit card issuers and transfer partners.

### Search live award space first

Since transfers are one-way, be sure to confirm an award is really bookable before you move any points. Wells Fargo transfers are quick, but with such a small transfer partner roster, you may not have more than one partner option to book a seat. Use point.me to see live options across your partners first and then check the partner’s website.

### Compare partner, portal, and cash

As you research your award trip, price the trip three ways: as a partner award, as a cash ticket and through the travel portal. Transferring is only the best option when the value is right. [point.me](http://point.me) can help you see all three prices at once. [See How Much Are Points Worth?](https://www.point.me/insights/wells-fargo-rewards-value/) for more on how to understand the value of your points.

## Card benefits that support the trip

Wells Fargo's travel value comes from two things: its transfer partners, and how simply its cards earn. There's no big stack of perks here, and that's fine, because the real strength is broad, low-effort earning. The travel card earns well across almost everything travel-related, including purchases many other cards don't count, so your balance grows without a ton of effort or research.

The annual-fee card adds more: hotels and airfare booked directly earn at a higher rate.

### Does the card you hold change the transfer math?

For Wells Fargo, barely, and that's the point. Both travel cards transfer to the same partners at the same full-value ratios. So the workarounds listed here apply to the no-fee Autograph card as well as the annual-fee Autograph Journey. What the pricier card adds is earning power and travel credits, not better transfer access.

## Tricks and workarounds to avoid

- Don't move points before you've confirmed a bookable award seat. Transfers can't be undone.
- Don't rely on buy-and-return tricks, manufactured spending, or payment games. They put your account at risk and don't help you travel.
- Don't treat Wells Fargo as a one-stop currency. Its roster is small, so plan to pair it with other currencies for United, Hyatt, and other gaps.
- Don't try to force a transfer to United through LifeMiles. Carrying a second currency is often the easier option.
- Don't assume that your transfer options are worse with the no-fee card. Both travel cards move points at full value, so check your ratio and go.

### Frequently asked questions about Wells Fargo tricks and workarounds

#### Can I book American Airlines with Wells Fargo points?

Yes, through a partner. Wells Fargo points do not transfer to American, but British Airways Club, Iberia and Cathay Pacific can all book American flights with a 1:1 transfer ratio. Use Avios for short nonstop flights, since they’re priced by distance, and use Cathay for premium cabins.

#### Can I transfer my Wells Fargo points to World of Hyatt?

No. Wells Fargo points do not transfer to World of Hyatt, and there's no workaround that can help with this. The best option here is to pair Wells Fargo points with another currency: hold Chase or Bilt for Hyatt, and keep Wells Fargo for its airline partners.

#### How does the low Wells Fargo transfer minimum help me?

Wells Fargo lets you transfer as little as one point, far fewer than other banks require. Not all airline programs have points that expire, but for the ones that do, this tiny transfer option is helpful. Transferring even a single point into an airline account can keep your points from expiring. Confirm that the partner counts this as account activity, then move the smallest allowable amount when a balance is close to expiring.

#### Does the Wells Fargo card that I carry change the transfer math?

No. Both travel cards let you transfer points to the same partners at the same full-value ratios, so the no-fee Autograph and the annual-fee card put you on equal footing when it comes to points value. The pricier card adds more earning power, not better transfers.

#### How do I know when transferring points is better than booking through the portal?

Price the trip three ways before you move points: as a partner award, as cash, and through the travel portal. Transfer points only when the fare is lowest, or when or when your points let you access space that cash can't reach. When the cash fare is low and the award is expensive, pay cash.

## Verdict

The strongest Wells Fargo tricks are simple and mostly about routing and pairing. Its small roster covers American through Avios and Cathay, and Delta through Flying Blue. Booking United flights is a bit tougher, given that the only workaround option is to book through Avianca LifeMiles. World of Hyatt is another loyalty program that isn’t a Wells Fargo partner, so pair your points with another currency to book. Use the one-point minimum to keep partner miles from expiring, and transfer at full value from either card. Wells Fargo earns its place as a strong complement to other cards, rather than a standalone option.

### point.me take

*— Jimmy Yoon, Head of Points Intelligence, point.me*

Wells Fargo is the program to keep an eye on. Over the past year they've been adding transfer partners and growing their list faster than any other flexible currency out there, which makes them one to watch as they build the program out.

That said, because the current list is still small, this isn't a program to put all your eggs in, as your options for using the points are fairly limited right now. I'd treat it as a good complementary program rather than your primary one.

One thing I'd highlight is the low minimum transfer requirement, which is a standout feature. It's worth valuing especially since many international programs still have expiry policies on their points, so being able to transfer in one point at a time gives you a way to keep those balances alive.
