Just because you have lots of Capital One miles, that doesn’t mean you can transfer them to any airline. Capital One miles transfer to a select set of airlines, and that set does not include American, United, or Delta. But you’re not completely out of luck. You can still fly all three using your Capital One miles. You just have to move them to an airline in the same alliance and book your seat from there. This guide shows you how to cover the gaps in Capital One’s partner list and work around them. We’ll also share some transfer tips that are unique to Capital One, like pooling miles between accounts and using the Emirates partnership to its fullest.

**Capital One tricks and workarounds at a glance:**

- To book American, use British Airways or Cathay Pacific for nonstop flights and Qantas for multi-segment trips.
- Book United through Air Canada Aeroplan.
- Book Delta through Flying Blue.
- There’s no way to book either World of Hyatt or Southwest with Capital One miles, so consider also carrying Chase or Bilt points to fill this gap.
- Pool miles between any two Capital One accounts to build a balance fast.
- Search live award space before you transfer your points, because these transactions can’t be undone.

## The airlines Capital One can't reach directly, and how to book each one

This table covers the programs that Capital One *can't* transfer to directly, and the workaround for each. To learn more about Capital One’s direct partner list, see our full guide: [Capital One Transfer Partners](https://www.point.me/insights/capital-one-transfer-partners-complete-list-best-uses/).

| **What you want to book** | **Transfer Capital One miles to** | **Transfer Ratio** | **What to watch** |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| American Airlines | A Oneworld partner: British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Qatar, Qantas | 1:1 | All these programs have different redemption rates and taxes/fees, so it’s best to compare which program offers the best value. Qatar has limits on who you can book award tickets for, so check first. |
| United | Air Canada Aeroplan, Avianca LifeMiles, JetBlue TrueBlue | 1:1 | Aeroplan adds a partner booking fee; United Polaris saver space is mostly offered only to United members with an eligible co-branded card |
| Delta | Air France-KLM Flying Blue, or Virgin Atlantic | 1:1 | Flying Blue usually wins on fees; Use Virgin for Delta One to Europe |
| Alaska (Atmos Rewards) | A Oneworld partner: BA, Cathay, Qantas | 1:1 | Use Avios for short hops |
| World of Hyatt | No transfers from Capital One | — | Pair your Cap One miles with Chase or Bilt, the only banks that transfer to Hyatt |
| Southwest | No transfers from Capital One | — | No alliance; Cash prices are usually a better choice than using points |

## Capital One: Tricks to book airlines that are not direct partners

These are the workarounds to get your Capital One miles working for non-direct partners. Just route your miles through the right alliance partner and confirm the seat availability first.

### Book American Airlines with Capital One miles: British Airways or Cathay Pacific for nonstop flights, Qantas for connections

American isn't a Capital One partner. But six of Capital One’s Oneworld partners can book American flights: Cathay Pacific Asia Miles, British Airways Club, Qatar Privilege Club, Finnair Plus, Japan Airlines Mileage Bank, and Qantas Frequent Flyer.

Check Cathay Pacific Asia Miles first. You’ll often find low prices on American economy and business class flights here. The catch? Cathay doesn’t always have access to every award seat through its online booking engine. In these cases, it’s worth giving Cathay Pacific a call to double check, especially if another Oneworld program, such as British Airways, *does *show an available seat. When Cathay doesn’t have access to the seat you want, use British Airways instead. BA has a 1:1 transfer ratio with Capital One, and it offers some award seats on American that other partners miss. Just keep in mind that it adds carrier surcharges on a few routes, and its long-haul flights can be expensive.

Qatar and British Airways, Avios programs with 1:1 transfer ratios to Capital One, are also good ways to book American flights. Qatar is where to look for AA premium cabins. It’s worth noting, however, that Qatar has restrictions on who you can book award tickets for, so unless your account is eligible to book award tickets for others, this may not work for you.

The process is simple. Try to find your seat via Cathay first, then try British Airways or Qatar. Confirm the exact American flight in the partner program before you transfer points. If you can’t see an American seat at a fair price through these workarounds, stop. Citi or Bilt points may give you access to American more cheaply, so use these currencies instead.

### Fly United with Capital One miles through Aeroplan

Capital One miles do not transfer directly to United. Air Canada Aeroplan (Star Alliance, 1:1 transfer ratio) is the best way to book those same seats with your Capital One miles. Capital One also transfers directly to a solid number of Star Alliance partners: Avianca LifeMiles, Turkish, KrisFlyer, and EVA. That means coverage across the alliance is broad and pathways to United are many. Aeroplan reliably lets you book United saver space, but it charges a partner booking fee. LifeMiles also has low prices on United business-class flights with no surcharges, when seats are available. So Aeroplan wins for reliability, and LifeMiles is usually the best for the lowest-price business-class fares.  A word of caution here, though: since 2025, United keeps most of its saver (or lowest-cost) space for its own members who have elite status or hold an eligible co-branded card. That means partner programs mostly cannot access these seats anymore. If you hit that wall, an eligible United co-brand card plus Chase or Bilt points are more likely to get you past it.

### Book Delta with Capital One miles through Flying Blue

Capital One miles don’t transfer to Delta, but it has two SkyTeam partners that can help. Air France-KLM Flying Blue (1:1 transfer ratio) is a strong option: it books Delta-operated flights as partner awards, often below the cost of Delta's own dynamic prices. Virgin Atlantic Flying Club (1:1 transfer ratio) is the second option, and it shines for Delta One flights to Europe. Virgin sometimes prices business class well below Flying Blue, but with much higher taxes and fees. So check both programs: Flying Blue for breadth, and Virgin for low transatlantic redemption rates. Search the Delta segment in each, confirm it, then transfer. Watch out for two things: both programs add surcharges on some routes, and they sometimes offer space that’s different from Delta's own. When Delta's cash fare is low, skip the transfer and pay cash.

### Book Alaska (Atmos Rewards) flights with Capital One miles

You can’t move Capital One miles straight into Atmos Rewards, Alaska's loyalty program. But Alaska recently joined the Oneworld alliance, so you have some options: book Alaska-operated flights through one of Capital One's many Oneworld partners instead. For short hops, British Airways or Qatar usually price them the lowest. For longer flights, Cathay Pacific tends to work better. Whichever you use, pull up the exact Alaska flight inside that partner's program and confirm the seat availability before you transfer.

Remember, it’s worth noting that Qatar restricts who you can book award tickets for, so unless your account is eligible to book award tickets for others, you may need to choose a different program.

### Alternatives for booking Hyatt, which is not a Capital One partner

Capital One miles don’t transfer to World of Hyatt, and Hyatt is the one hotel program where points routinely beat cash. The best remedy here is to pair your Capital One miles with a currency from another bank card.  Chase points transfer to Hyatt at 4:3 (Sapphire Preferred) or 1:1 (Sapphire Reserve family). Bilt lets you transfer points to Hyatt at a 1:1 ratio with no premium-card requirement. Bilt is the best option if you’re looking for a 1:1 ratio without a premium-card fee. Chase is the right choice if you already hold a Sapphire Reserve or simply prefer it to Bilt. Capital One's whole pitch is simplicity, and Hyatt is usually worth holding a second card for. Don't substitute a Capital One hotel partner when Hyatt is the one you want, because the value isn't the same.

### Capital One does not partner with Southwest, and that's usually fine

Southwest isn’t part of any alliance, so you can’t use an indirect route to book their flights.  It's not a huge loss. Rapid Rewards prices tickets dynamically based on the cash fare, so even a direct transfer from Chase or Bilt wouldn't beat paying cash by much. Book Southwest with cash unless you value the Companion Pass benefit through one of their co-branded cards, and keep your Capital One miles for the partners where transfers have real value.

## Tricks specific to Capital One miles

These two strategies are unique to Capital One, thanks to a specific pooling policy and one standout airline partner.

### Pool miles between two Capital One accounts to achieve your next award

Capital One lets you move miles between any two Capital One accounts. The account holders don't have to share an address or a last name, and most banks either forbid this or limit it to a single household. This is the fastest way to quickly get enough points to book an award. Say you're a few thousand miles short of a business-class seat. If a partner, parent, or friend has a Capital One card, they can move miles into your account, and you can then book from the new balance. Always remember to confirm the award availability first, then pool the miles into one account, then transfer to the airline. Pooling between Capital One accounts is reversible; the miles transfer to an airline is not.

You can also “convert” your cash-back from Capital One cards, such as the Savor or Spark cards, into transferable Capital One miles if you have an eligible Venture card. Learn more about [How to Transfer Capital One Miles](https://www.point.me/insights/how-to-transfer-capital-one-miles/).

### Use Capital One's Emirates partnership for fifth-freedom routes

Capital One miles transfer to Emirates Skywards at a 2:1.5 ratio. The ratio isn't full value, but Emirates flies some valuable routes that make the transfer worth it. So-called "fifth-freedom" routes, flights between cities that don’t layover in Dubai, offer hidden value. Think New York-to-Milan or Bangkok-to-Hong Kong on Emirates with its swanky passenger bar and shower suites. Search for the specific Emirates segment on Skywards, confirm the seat, then transfer the points. Skywards adds fuel surcharges on some routes, so check the total before you commit. It can sometimes help to check availability and pricing through Japan Airlines Mileage Bank as well for the same flights, as their pricing could be more competitive.

## What to do before you transfer

These tips apply to every transfer strategy. Skip them and you risk wasting your miles.

### Search live award space first

Confirm that your preferred award seat is really bookable before you move any miles. Transfers are one-way and can’t be reversed. Capital One transfers are instant, so there's no lag between when you move your miles and when you can book. Use point.me to see live options across Capital One’s partners, then check the individual partner’s website.

### Compare partner, portal, and cash booking options

When booking an award, price the trip three ways: as a partner award, as a cash ticket, and through the Capital One Travel portal. Transferring is the best option only when it costs the fewest miles or lets you access award space that cash can't touch. See [How Much Are Points Worth?](https://www.point.me/insights/how-much-are-capital-one-miles-worth/) for the math.

### Don't fear a worse-than-1:1 transfer ratio

Capital One transfers to a few programs below a 1:1 ratio, like Emirates, JAL, and EVA, all at a 2:1.5 transfer ratio. Even so, the all-in price can still be the best and lowest option. Compare the all-in cost, not the ratio.

### Use transfer bonuses only when you’re ready to travel

Capital One runs transfer bonuses occasionally, and they can really stretch your miles, but only when you already have a bookable award in mind. Never transfer points just because there’s a bonus, hoping you’ll use them in the future. Check out [Current Transfer Bonuses](https://www.point.me/insights/current-transfer-bonuses/).

### Figure out if your card changes how you transfer miles

The Capital One card you hold can impact your transfer process, a little. Every Capital One miles card has the same transfer partner list and the same transfer ratios. These two things matter, however. First, only miles-earning cards, like Venture and Venture X, allow you to transfer miles to partners at all; the cash-back cards don't. Second, the Venture X card earns 10 miles per dollar on hotels booked through the Capital One Travel portal, which can be a better choice than transferring miles for a standalone hotel booking. Your card impacts whether you can transfer miles at all, and how you might want to use the portal, not which airlines you can reach.

## Tricks and workarounds to avoid

- Don't move miles before you've confirmed that an award seat is bookable. Transfers can't be undone.
- Don't rely on buy-and-return tricks, manufactured spending, or payment games. They put your account at risk and don't help you travel.
- Don't assume every airline is a direct Capital One partner. American, United, Delta, and Alaska are not.
- Don't avoid a partner just because the transfer ratio is below 1:1. A worse ratio can still get you the cheapest booking.
- Pooling miles from another Capital One account could mean the difference between an economy seat and business class.

### Frequently asked questions about Capital One tricks and workarounds

#### Can I book American Airlines with Capital One miles?

American isn't a Capital One partner, but six of Capital One's Oneworld partners (Cathay Pacific Asia Miles, British Airways Executive Club, Qatar Privilege Club, Finnair Plus, Japan Airlines Mileage Bank, and Qantas Frequent Flyer) can book American flights. Cathay is worth checking first since it often prices American economy and business low, though availability can be tricky. When Cathay doesn't offer the seat you want, use British Airways Executive Club instead, which has a 1:1 transfer ratio and includes some American seats that other partners don’t. Just remember that it adds carrier surcharges on a few routes and its long-haul flights can be expensive.

#### Can I book World of Hyatt hotels with Capital One miles?

No. World of Hyatt is not a Capital One transfer partner, and there’s no workaround. The best option here is to pair Capital One miles with another currency. Chase or Bilt points transfer to Hyatt, and you can keep Capital One for its airline partners. Bilt transfers to Hyatt at 1:1 with no premium card required.

#### How does pooling Capital One miles work?

Capital One lets you move miles between any two Capital One accounts, even across households. After someone moves miles into your account, you can transfer to the airline of your choosing from the new combined balance. Pooling is reversible, but the transfer to the airline is not, so do it in that order.

#### Does my Capital One card impact how I can transfer miles?

Somewhat. Only the miles-earning cards, like Venture and Venture X, earn transferable miles that can be moved to partners. Cash-back cards don't, unless you have an eligible Venture card as well. Every Capital One miles-earning card has the same partner list and the same transfer ratios. The Venture X offers strong earning (10x) when you book hotels through its portal, which can be a smarter option than transferring miles to a hotel currency.

#### How do I know when transferring miles beats cash or the portal?

Price the trip three ways before you move miles: as a partner award, as a cash ticket, and through the Capital One Travel portal. Transfer only when it costs the fewest miles or lets you book space you couldn’t with cash. When the cash fare is low and the award is expensive, pay cash.

## Verdict

If you can’t transfer Capital One miles to your favorite airline, never fear. There’s often a workaround for that. Capital One miles do not transfer to American, United, or Delta directly, but British Airways and Qantas let you book American; Aeroplan covers United; and Flying Blue covers Delta. Pool miles across multiple accounts to cover a shortfall, and pair your card with Chase or Bilt points to book Hyatt.

### point.me take

*— Jimmy Yoon, Head of Points Intelligence, point.me*

Capital One Miles get overlooked compared to other bank currencies, but they're seriously worth considering. The main reason is that they have the largest list of airline transfer partners of any transferable currency out there, paired with a simple but rewarding earning structure.

And don’t judge a program by its transfer ratios off the bat. Even the non-1:1 partners like EVA Air and Japan Airlines Mileage Bank shouldn't be overlooked, because the total number of miles needed for a trip (say, to Asia) can still come out lower through those programs than what other programs would charge, even after accounting for the worse ratio.
