Discover Portland (OR)

Where "weird" is a badge of honor, food carts offer some of the best eats in the city, and a little rain doesn't stop folks from getting into the great outdoors

Oregon's biggest city by a long shot, Portland still manages to feel a lot like a small town. Locals are laid back and friendly, and usually happy to opine on their favorite food cart, happy hour, or biking trail. Each neighborhood has its own version of Main Street, and a robust public transit system makes getting around efficient and inexpensive. Don't be surprised if you find yourself absent-mindedly wondering what it would be like to move to Portland, especially if the sun is out.

Portland's main attraction is its lifestyle. Getting outside is high on the priority list, regardless of the weather (Oregonians know there's no such thing as bad weather — only bad gear), and that's easy to do when there are parks all over. In fact, you can walk right from one of the city's most popular neighborhoods right into one of the country's biggest urban forests. Portland also celebrates the abundance of local food and drink, with dozens of coffee roasteries, craft breweries, wineries, and distilleries throughout the city, several innovative and award-winning restaurants, and more than 300 food carts to choose from. And there are so many excellent day trip options from Portland, including the Oregon Coast's beaches, Mt. Hood's year-round skiing, the Columbia Gorge's epic hiking trails, and the rolling hills of the Willamette Valley's wine regions.

Why we love Portland (OR)

Why we love Portland (OR) (1 of 5)
Portland makes it easy to fall in love with nature, even in the heart of the city. There are trees everywhere and multiple beloved parks, including the 36-acre Waterfront Park that runs along the Willamette River downtown.
Portland knows how to feed people well. Not only does it have a number of award-winning chefs at the helm of several restaurants, it's a city that punches well above its size when it comes to culinary diversity, thanks in large part to the proliferation of food carts. Your taste buds can often take an around-the-world trip in the space of one food cart pod.
This is a small city with great public transportation, making it easy to explore without a car. Portland is also a really bike-friendly city, with plentiful bike lanes and bike trails that snake through neighborhoods on both sides of the river. Summertime visitors should keep an eye out for the Pedalpalooza Bike Festival (July) and Bridge Pedal (August), the latter of which closes the city's bridges to cars for a day so bicycles can rule the road.
With "Keep Portland Weird" as a semi-official slogan, the quirkiness of the city shouldn't be surprising. Then you see a guy wearing a kilt and a Darth Vader mask riding a unicycle and playing bagpipes that are spouting fire, you notice most of the locals just smile and nod as if to say, "Oh, him again," and you realize Portland takes this whole "weird" thing seriously.
Portland is a perfect base for day trips to the Columbia River Gorge, the Oregon Coast, Mt. Hood, and multiple wine regions. You can even see the still-steaming crater of Mt. St. Helens, which is about 70mi (112kms) north of Portland in neighboring Washington State.
