Scandinavian Airlines, known as SAS, is the newest member of the SkyTeam airline alliance. Its loyalty program, SAS EuroBonus, offers good award availability with partners. But its difficult-to-earn miles (which they call points) mean it’s not very practical for those based in the United States. According to point.me’s analysis of the best airline loyalty programs, SAS EuroBonus scores 39.58 out of 100 – not the worst score, but definitely not in the top 20.

Let’s take a look at SAS EuroBonus, how to earn miles with the program, and everything it offers.

Overview of SAS EuroBonus

Formerly a member of Star Alliance, SAS made waves when it joined SkyTeam last year. Its new partners include Delta Air Lines and Air France/KLM.

As the flag carrier of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, SAS operates flights all over Europe, and to the United States, Africa, and Asia.

Unfortunately, there is no way to transfer credit card points to SAS EuroBonus.

Airline partners of SAS EuroBonus

SAS is a member of the SkyTeam alliance, which includes the following airlines:

  • Aerolineas Argentinas
  • Aeromexico
  • Air Europa
  • Air France
  • China Airlines
  • China Eastern
  • Delta Air Lines
  • Garuda Indonesia
  • Kenya Airways
  • KLM
  • Korean Air
  • Saudia
  • Tarom

In addition to SkyTeam partners, SAS also has some non-alliance airline partners:

  • Etihad Airways
  • Singapore Airlines
  • Wideroe

What we love about SAS EuroBonus

SAS EuroBonus has its positives, especially when it comes to redeeming miles. Award flights are relatively affordable and not difficult to find, even when flying with partners.

What we don’t love about SAS EuroBonus

The biggest downside to SAS EuroBonus is how difficult it is to earn miles with the program. With relatively few methods to do so, earning enough miles for an award redemption isn’t easy. SAS is also a member of SkyTeam, which is the smallest airline alliance, meaning you’ll have fewer partners for flight redemptions.

SAS elite status tiers and how to earn them

SAS offers three levels of elite status, each with different benefits. These include SkyTeam elite status, free checked luggage, airport lounge access, and more.

How to earn SAS EuroBonus miles

Earning SAS EuroBonus miles is difficult as the airline has no credit card transfer partners and doesn’t offer a co-branded credit card within the United States. The only ways to earn SAS EuroBonus miles are the following:

  • Flying: Either with SAS or its partners
  • Travel: Book with eligible hotel and rental car partners
  • Shopping: Using the SAS shopping portal or with eligible restaurants and shops
  • Buy biofuel: Earn bonus points when buying biofuel on flights

Redeeming miles with SAS EuroBonus

Redeeming miles with SAS EuroBonus is simple. You’ll simply need to head to the SAS website and select “pay with points” for your search. This works only for SAS-operated flights.

If you want to redeem your miles for a partner award, you’ll head to SAS’s partner award page

You can also use EuroBonus miles for flight upgrades; the cost to do so will vary depending on where you’re going and your level of elite status.

How much are SAS EuroBonus miles worth?

SAS EuroBonus miles can be very valuable, depending on where you’re going. SAS EuroBonus uses an award chart for flights it operates and another chart for its partners.

The best SAS EuroBonus redemptions

SAS EuroBonus has some sweet spots within its program. Here’s a look at some of the most notable ones:

Business class to Europe

The biggest sweet spot within the SAS EuroBonus program is business class on SAS-operated flights to Europe. If you can find it, it will cost you just 50,000 miles one way.

Economy class in the United States

SAS charges just 12,500 miles one-way for economy-class seats within the United States. This can be especially useful for pricey transcontinental routes with partner Delta.

Business class from the U.S. to South America

Another excellent sweet spot is using SAS miles for Delta One flights to South America. At just 60,000 miles one way for these business class flights, this can be hundreds of thousands of miles fewer than what Delta would charge.

Tips for using SAS EuroBonus miles

Aim for SAS-operated flights

While SAS does have a partner award flight, it can be more expensive than redeeming for SAS-operated flights. For example, you can fly within Denmark, Norway, and Sweden for just 5,000 miles one way. That’s cheaper than any flight you’ll find on its partner chart.

Use point.me to find flights for you

The SAS website isn’t difficult to use, but it’s also fairly limited and requires you to navigate different pages when you’re looking for partner flights versus flights operated by SAS. Point.me provides a better search experience, allowing you to search not only SAS flights, but those that could potentially offer a better deal, whether that means spending fewer points or flying direct instead of relying on a layover.

Search for flights in advance

Generally speaking, the farther in advance you start looking for a flight, the better your chances of finding a great fare. Airlines tend to release the most award space when their calendar opens, ranging from 360 to 330 days in advance.
